Growing Up in North Dakota
Finally it was in Max that my dad was introduced to the raw hamburger snack that he loved. They would eat it with saltine crackers and beer. I’m sure the hamburger was very good beef that was seasoned with onion and salt and pepper – it was probably an ethnic dish popular among whatever group of people settled in this town. I know that many of their last names ended in “ski.”
From Max, we moved to Hamilton, where I attended 3rd and 4th grade. When we took you, Bjorn and Jon, to North Dakota, this is the town that we visited. You may remember me standing in the middle of main street taking a picture and not a car came by. This was another very small town, all of the towns, except for Bowbells where we moved next, having populations of 250 or so. My dad again was superintendent/ principal/ teacher/ basketball coach.
