Tomorrow (today) is the predicted day for the SCOTUS ruling on “presidential immunity”.

It has been a long time coming.

If I were a Supreme Court justice I could have decided this case in one day (or a minute!). 🙂

They apparently wanted to make a ruling “for the ages” to cover all possible hypotheticals.

I subscribe to the substack daily letter (entitled Civil Discourse) from Joyce Vance. In her letter today she gave a link to the SCOTUS website where you can find and see the text of the full ruling. I’m going to try and read it carefully. Every historian and pundit and journalist will opine on it but why not read the real thing?

Letters from an American from the historian Heather Cox Richardson is another substack daily letter that I have followed for a long time. It keeps me (mostly) sane.

The second session at the Aspen Ideas Festival, The Court Decides, was not as consequential as the debate watch party but it was great to see the panelists in person. All three were so eloquent and so informed. George Conway did tend to ramble…

The question of whether Biden will step down seems to have diminished. It is up to him. He cannot be forced to step down. I will do whatever I can (donate money, travel to a swing state, ...) to support his candidacy.

The real question is why has the other party (Republican) not replaced their fatally flawed candidate?

I am hoping that today’s court decision about “presidential immunity” can free up the D.C. insurrection case and that it can go to trial before the election. Jack Smith may alter the charges so that it can proceed more quickly. I have heard the phrase “slim to win”.

In the worst case scenario where rump wins the election (horrors!) it has been said that the federal cases in D.C. and Florida will be dropped because the DOJ will tell them to stop. How will this impact the nation’s self-image and conscience? The story of the Jan 6 insurrection and the stolen classified documents would just be forgotten? May this not come to be.

I look forward to July 11th when rump will be sentenced.
