Rory, Poppy,
Today I advise (I affirm that you did not request my
advice but I offer it anyway! 😉) about distance
from the car ahead and braking policy. And one more thing, too.
Tailgating is rude. Following the car ahead too closely
is not only dangerous it is impolite. It’s also unnecessary – what’s
the hurry? Some would say that if you leave a lot of room
between your car and the one ahead that other cars could insert
themselves between. True, and that’s okay. Remember – we’re
not in a hurry! Just slow down until you are far enough behind
that inserted car.
Beginning to brake at a stop sign or stop light should
be done a good distance from the stop line. It’s good to
brake gradually not suddenly. Your passengers will be more
comfortable and pedestrians will know that you have seen them.

This is MUCH BETTER:

When I am driving and have passengers who have never ridden
in my car I tell them that I have a story, a request – I have
a “spiel” that goes like this:
If I’m going too fast or too slowly,
If I’m following the car ahead too closely,
If it’s too hot or too cold,
If my driving is making you anxious,
Speak UP! Let me know!
I’m the kind of driver who listens to their passengers.
Some (most) drivers seem to be insulted if a passenger
requests a change in their style. Not me.
Be well,
Be safe,
guJon
